Consumer Classes & Events
The Center is interested in helping patients learn about approaches and strategies to improve health and prevent illness. You can view any classes, lectures, workshops, presentations or intensives offered at the Center, including topics on complementary/alternative therapies and lifestyle enhancing programs, by clicking here for a list of current Center offerings. The Center is located at 245 Fifth Avenue (between 27th and 28th Streets) in New York City.
In September we will again be offering Mindfulness Meditation Sessions. The Rev. Koshin Paley Ellison, a Zen Buddhist priest from the Village Zendo (www.villagezendo.org), trained at the Chaplaincy Department at Beth Israel Medical Center, is offering Zen meditation to patients, practitioners and the general public at the Center for Health and Healing. He is the cofounder of the Buddhist Psychotherapy Collective (www.dharmateam.com).
Sessions consist of brief instruction followed by a 25-minute meditation session. All are welcome. There is no charge for these sessions. Sessions will be held on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:00 P.M. beginning on September 8, 2005 at the Center for Health and Healing, 245 Fifth Avenue, 2nd floor, New York, NY 10016 (Fifth Ave between 27th and 28th Sts).
There will be no class held on Thursday November 10, 2005.
Center staff also present classes, lectures and workshops outside the Center.
Three Seminars with the University of Arizonas Program in Integrative Medicine
Roberta Lee, MD is currently the Medical Director of the Continuum Center for Health and Healing in New York City. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at The New York Botanical Garden and a Diplomate of the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.
Courses Taught:
AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO HEART HEALTH AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
This leading-edge workshop will focus on the latest research on the integrative approach to cardiology research and the maintenance of heart health. Topics will include diets and the scientific rationale for their use, and an in-depth discussion on lipid management and diagnosis. Tools for stress-free living, such as breathwork, yoga and simple meditation will be included, and information will also be shared on how stress can seriously erode health. We will conclude by examining the increasingly important role of botanical medicine as an alternative and complementary treatment for heart disease. We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of incorporating specific plants for heart conditions.

INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES TO WOMENS HEALTH IN 2005: Living Well in the Transition Years
This workshop on Integrative Medicine addresses womens health from top to bottom. Dr. Tieraona Lowdog, one of the countrys leading authorities on the medical use of botanicals, will share her extensive wisdom on living a balanced life. She will also take an in-depth look at the use of botanicals for menopause and for general womens health. An important aspect of the day will be the influence of diet on womens health with special emphasis given to topics such as the optimal foods for the prevention of osteoporosis and breast cancer. The speakers will also address the use of natural hormones and consider both their risks and benefits.

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE: A Holistic Approach to Mental Well being
In this workshop, designed to empower healthcare professionals and individual seekers, Dr. Eve Wood will teach an approach to mental well-being that bridges biology, medicine, psychology and spirituality. Drawing on over 20 years of clinical and teaching experience, Dr. Wood will use her patients stories to illustrate her treatment model and share her message of hope and inspiration. She will be joined by Dr. Roberta Lee, who will lecture on nutrition and the relationship of food and mood. Dr. Lee will also discuss the use of botanical supplements for mental health and stress.
