Anti-emetic effects
Harris PE. Acupressure: a review of the literature. Complementary Therapies in Medicine. 5(3): 156-61, 1997.
This review of the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of acupressure included Western research on single-point acupressure and Chinese research on multi-point acupressure. The most solid evidence supports the use of acupressure in reducing feelings of nausea during pregnancy, after surgery and in cancer chemotherapy.
Post-operative nausea and vomiting
Lee A and Done ML. The use of nonpharmacologic techniques to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting: a meta-analysis. Anesthesia & Analgesia. 88(6): 1362-9, 1999.
Nineteen studies were eligible for meta-analysis covering acupuncture, electroacupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, acupoint stimulation and acupressure for post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Nonpharmacologic techniques were similar to antemetics in preventing early vomiting and late vomiting in adults and were better than placebo at preventing early nausea and early vomiting in adults and similar to placebo at preventing late nausea and vomiting. There was no benefit found in children. Using nonpharmacologic techniques, 20% to 25% of adults will not have early PONV compared with placebo.
Weight reduction
Ernst E. Acupuncture/acupressure for weight reduction? A systematic review. Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift. 109(2): 60-62, 1997.
A review of four placebo or sham-controlled clinical trials, all with methodological difficulties, revealed contradictory results. There is currently no clear picture of the effect of acupuncture or acupressure on appetite reduction or body weight.
