Use with Surgery
Petry, JJ. Surgery and Complementary Therapies: A Review. Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. 6(5): 64-74, September, 2000.
This review reports on the available information on the incorporation of complementary therapies in surgery. The role of acupuncture, music, massage therapy, therapeutic touch and Reiki, as well as the use of herbs and supplements to modify surgical outcomes, are explored. The effects of psychological stress and the potential relief from that distress through relaxation techniques like hypnosis, suggestion and imagery, as well as coping styles also are reviewed.
Reiki and Wound Healing
Wirth DP, Richardson JT, Eidelman WS. Wound Healing and Complementary Therapies: a Review. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. 2(4): 493-502, Winter, 1996.
A series of five experiments were conducted by Wirth et al. which examined the effect of Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, LeShan, and Intercessory Prayer techniques on the re-epithelialization rate of full thickness dermal wounds as to specific methodological and related factors. This review article examines the methodological designs of the series of studies, along with the Therapeutic Touch practitioners phenomenologically-based journal reports. While the placebo-controlled double-blind methodological designs used in the series were as stringent as those used in other fields of scientific inquiry, the overall results of the experiments were inconclusive in establishing the efficacy of the treatment interventions for accelerating the rate of re-epithelialization of full thickness dermal wounds.
